Challenge Description

Energy companies are increasingly deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enable peak shaving, market participation, flexibility services and grid stabilization. Existing platforms such as Withthegrid provide real-time monitoring, control, dashboards and alerting of energy assets. However, they primarily focus on operational visibility rather than predictive intelligence and customer-level business insight. The challenge is to design and prototype a BESS Intelligence Layer and Customer Dashboard that transforms operational battery data into predictive insights, optimization strategies and business-oriented decision support.

Business Context / Why This Matters?

As BESS deployments scale, asset owners and energy suppliers need more than monitoring. They need intelligence. Batteries operate in complex environments influenced by tariffs, market prices, grid constraints, degradation behavior and customer load patterns.

Without predictive analytics and automated advisory capabilities, battery operators leave value untapped. A smart intelligence layer can improve revenue stacking, reduce degradation risk, optimize dispatch strategies and provide customers with clear visibility into performance and financial return.

This challenge explores how AI can sit on top of existing monitoring platforms such as Withthegrid and translate operational telemetry into actionable financial and strategic insights.

Specific Requirements

  • The solution must operate as an intelligence layer on top of an existing monitoring platform such as Withthegrid, without replacing it
  • Integration must be read-only with respect to the source monitoring system
  • The PoC must be demonstrable live on a laptop or tablet

Solution (Expected Outcome)

  • A working proof of concept showing AI-augmented battery intelligence on top of monitoring data
  • A live dashboard demonstrating operational KPIs, financial performance indicators and optimization insights
  • Clear explanation of how the intelligence layer could integrate with platforms such as Withthegrid
  • Optional: A separate advisory report generator that allows input of key variables such as battery size, capex (Capital Expenditure), energy prices, usage profile and market participation strategy, and automatically produces a structured advisory report including ROI, payback period and value stacking analysis. This reporting component may be developed as a standalone module independent from the dashboard solution.
